After doing some digging around after failing to get any sound recording from my Audigy 2, seems that there might be an issue with having over 4 gigs of RAM in my system.
I'd like to draw your attention to this Creative issue report:

In particular the last line: "It is severely hurting customer trust and the Sound Blaster brand."
